What are SmartLipo and VASER®?
SmartLipo and VASER® are different alternatives to liposuction. They can be used separately or together.
SmartLipo is the first laser-assisted liposuction technique to be developed. Liposuction always involves the use of a thin tube called a cannula to break up fat cells to make them easier to remove. With SmartLipo, the cannula contains a laser fiber that melts the fat and also stimulates collagen production to tighten the skin.
VASER® is a type of tumescent liposuction that uses ultrasound. The process involves injecting a saline solution that makes the fat cells swell up. It also includes an anesthetic called lidocaine. After injecting the solution into the targeted area, Dr. Walter will insert a probe that emits ultrasonic waves that liquefy the fat cells. The doctor then inserts a cannula that suctions out the liquefied fat.
Combining the two techniques involves the following four steps: 1) Injecting the saline/lidocaine solution, 2) liquefying the fat with VASER® 3) using the SmartLipo laser to stimulate the collagen and 4) removing the liquefied fat. Combining the two techniques reduces both the amount of loose skin left by the liposuction and the recovery time. The patient may have to wear a compression garment for about two weeks after the procedure to help mold their body into the desired contours.
