Medical Aesthetics of New England has been serving the Boston area for 14 years and counting. One of our latest services is the P shot, a revolutionary new treatment for men. One shot will reinvigorate your sex life, but how long does it last?
What Is the P Shot?
Trademarked as the “Priapus Shot,” named after the Greek god of fertility, this treatment uses platelet-rich plasma to stimulate the growth of new cells in the penis. The platelet-rich plasma is administered directly into the penis via injection, where it can then work its magic.
What Is Platelet-Rich Plasma?
Platelet-rich plasma, also called PRP, has been in use for decades now. It concentrates platelets, the part of your blood that stimulates wound healing. When this is injected into your body, it tricks your cells into activating their healing mechanisms.
Brand new, healthy cells will be created by this process. In addition, your body may start to remove some of your older, damaged cells. The end result is a restoration in function.
Is This Treatment Safe?
It absolutely is. Firstly, we make PRP from your blood, meaning there is no risk of rejection or possible complications from donor material. Secondly, this is not a surgical procedure. You will be in and out of our offices in a little over an hour.
PRP treatments are nothing new. Many famous athletes have used them to get back on to the field in less time after an injury. The FDA has been approving cosmetic treatments using PRP for the last decade, and so far no reports of serious complications have occurred.
How Long Does it Take to Work?
Once PRP has been administered, you may wonder how long it takes to begin working. While we recommend abstaining from sexual activity for 24 hours as a precaution, the truth is many patients confess to breaking those rules. Results are visible often within a day.
However, complete results may take up to a month to be noticeable. This is due to how the body responds to PRP injections. The areas closest to the injection site tend to experience changes first, while the surrounding areas may take more time to improve.
Most patients report satisfactory results within a week. Very few experience a minimal response, in which case they may require a second treatment. We will schedule a follow-up appointment for about one month after the initial treatment to evaluate your progress and determine if you need additional help.
How Long Does the P Shot Last?
While the exact duration of the treatment will depend on your health and age, most patients find that the benefits are noticeable for about a year. Many patients also notice that the benefits carry on past that point but are not quite as strong or as perceptible as before.
Since the treatment stimulates the creation of new cells, it truly is creating long-lasting improvements in your body. But, just as we don’t notice aging until it builds up over time, we also get used to those improvements and stop noticing them after a while.
PRP treatment is widely understood to have cumulative benefits. This means that if you were to get a second treatment, the benefits would compound with those from the first. There is obviously a limit to this, but it has been seen in sports rehabilitation cases.
If you feel that the effects are wearing off after your first treatment, consider getting a booster shot. A second round will continue to heal your body and remove aging cells while helping to keep the new cells from the first treatment in good shape.
Maximizing the Duration
For the best results, it’s important to take good care of your cardiovascular system. Penile function is directly dependent on blood flow. Regular cardiovascular exercise, such as jogging or cycling, will improve your heart’s performance and blood flow.
Maintain a heart-healthy diet and avoid activities that harm your heart and lungs, especially smoking. Doing these things will help you retain the benefits from the P shot for longer.
What Should I Expect From Treatment?
If the idea of getting an injection in your penis once a year sounds like something you’d rather avoid, worry not. We absolutely understand your concerns and take every precaution to make sure that you have a safe, painless experience.
The treatment begins by drawing your blood to produce the PRP. A tube will take blood from your body into a centrifuge, which separates the blood into its four main components. From there, we’ll collect the platelets and plasma only and prepare it for injection.
In the meantime, we apply a generous amount of topical anesthetic. This is to ensure that you don’t feel the injection of local anesthetic. That’s right: two forms of anesthetic are used to guarantee a smooth experience.
The PRP is injected quickly once the local anesthetic has taken effect. That’s all there is to it! You’ll be out of the treatment room in less than an hour.
