Often, the first signs of aging happen in the face. You can see them in the lines around your mouth and nose. They’re in the droop in your brow, the creases in your forehead, and the crow’s feet by your eyes. While the visible signs of aging cannot be prevented, they can be reversed. BOTOX® may be the skin rejuvenation option you’ve been looking for.
The Advantages of BOTOX®
There are many cosmetic benefits when it comes to BOTOX®. Primarily, it is used to improve the appearance of wrinkles and other facial lines that come with the passage of time. BOTOX® is derived from a form of bacteria called botulinum toxin. It is a neurotoxin and temporarily relaxes the muscles in treated areas.
When BOTOX® is directly injected in small amounts into the affected areas of your face, it ceases the muscle activity that causes visible wrinkles. During the duration of the muscle relaxation, the skin will smooth, eliminating wrinkles for four to six months. If you are pleased with your results, you can return for more sessions when the treatment wears off. In many cases, patients find that the lines and wrinkles become less pronounced after several sessions as the muscles in the face become accustomed to their new position.
What to Expect During a BOTOX® Treatment Session
BOTOX® treatments are outpatient procedures, and anesthesia is not necessary. Due to the injection technique, discomfort is kept to a minimum during treatment. You should see noticeable improvement in the appearance of your wrinkles after about a week. To avoid problems and increased bruising, you should avoid alcohol, anti-inflammatory medication, and aspirin prior to your procedure.
Side effects are generally rare after BOTOX® treatments. The most common problems are some bruising, headaches, or irritation around the injection sites. Occasionally, patients have experienced stomach discomfort after a procedure. You should not apply any pressure to the areas that were treated or lay down for the first four hours, otherwise the BOTOX® could shift to other parts of the face and cause drooping.
