At Medical Aesthetics of New England, PC, we provide Mesotherapy as a series of microinjections that treats cellulite using a combination of medications compounded by a state licensed pharmacy. The medications activate cyclic AMP (cAMP) in fat cells and stimulate them to release fat. Some of the medications stimulate cAMP production and some slow down cAMP’s breakdown. Other medications activate adipocyte lipase, which changes the triglycerides in fat cells to free fatty acids and glycerol. This combination of medicines smoothes cellulite and rejuvenates the skin. Excess skin is tightened along with reducing the lumpy appearance of cellulite. Mesotherapy is a gradual process, (unlike liposuction, which can leave scarring, lumpiness, loose skin and dimpling). Unlike Endermologie, Mesotherapy actually works!
At Medical Aesthetics of New England, PC, the treatments generally take anywhere from 20 to 30 minutes. Some patients like to have a topical anesthetic applied to the skin first, and this takes an additional 30 minutes.
There may be some minor discomfort during the injection, and maybe a stinging or burning sensation for a few hours afterward. Since Mesotherapy works through stimulating fat cells to release fat, some swelling may be seen afterwards. Occasionally there is some localized bruising at the injection site, but this is generally minor. Patients find it particularly attractive that they can resume their normal activities immediately after a treatment. Anti-inflammatory medications such as aspirin, naproxen (Aleve) or ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) should be avoided around the time of the injections as these medications may diminish the response of Mesotherapy. Ice or Tylenol may be used instead if needed. Also, sports or heavy exercising should be avoided for 48 hours afterward, along with anything that increases bruising/bleeding or vasodilatation – such as alcohol, hot tub, or sauna use.
Mesotherapy has been used in Europe for over 50 years. It is available in other parts of the US, but Medical Aesthetics of New England, PC is the first spa in the Northwest suburbs, and one of the first spas in Massachusetts to offer this valuable treatment. The Registered Nurses and Physicians administering Mesotherapy at Medical Aesthetics of New England, PC are specifically trained and certified in this procedure, and we will strive to answer any and all questions you might have, and to minimize discomfort and maximize results.
Yes, it is very different. Besides involving no general anesthesia and surgical risk, mesotherapy requires no recovery time. The gradual effects of the treatment allows the skin to retract as fat dissolves. In fact, mesotherapy can be used post liposuction to further sculpt areas that may be lumpy or uneven.
It depends on the patient’s sensitivity to the mesotherapy ingredients. Some patients see results after one treatment session, while others may require four to five treatments to begin to see results. Often the patient’s clothing will be come looser and friends and family will tell the patient they appear thinner.
